9 Signs of Spiritual Maturity – Humility

1 Peter 3:4 (NCV)4 No, your beauty should come from within you—the beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit that will never be destroyed and is very precious to God.

Every person that you meet knows something you don’t; learn from them.”

Through reading and research, I am more convinced that humility is one of the most important spiritual virtues. When we operate with a prideful spirit, we experience resistance, but if we operate with a spirit of humility, the world will come to our aid. And more importantly, the Almighty will come to our aid.

The spirit of pride never wins. The spirit of humility is undefeated. We can’t lose if you operate out of a humble heart. Will we be taken advantage of on occasion? Sure. But God will honor us. Will you have to eat some humble pie along the way? Absolutely! But the net result will be the favor of God.

It was by no accident that Jesus Himself washed in deep humility the feet of his disciples before the Lord’s Supper and then asked them to do the same with each other.

Humility shouldn’t be taken for being “passive” or “dependent”.  “Passiveness” comes from frailty, from helplessness and fear of not being persecuted.  People often take this attitude of bowing in false devotion for genuine humility.

Humility is the very opposite in fact: it is a quite noble attitude, it is respectable, uplifting, ineffable, divine; it is the attribute of individuals who are strong and wise Can you think about people in your life that are very strong but humble at the same time? I can and its very easy to respect what they say and do.  Humility means to profoundly and sincerely admit the value of the fellow people.

FATHER GOD – THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE CHANCE TO LEARN AND TOUCH OTHERS AROUND US. IN OUR WORLD OF PRIDE AND “GETTING AHEAD”, REMIND US THAT YOU  GIVE US WHAT WE NEED. WE DON’T ACHIEVE ANYTHING ON OUR OWN MERIT. HELP US TO THINK OF OTHERS MORE, AND OURSELVES LESS.THANK YOU FOR OUR LESSONS THAT WE LEARN THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING HUMBLE. AMEN

    • Definitely agree with that statement. Or vice versa (ie overestimating one’s strengths and underestimating one’s shortcomings) In my opinion, if we do either one there is an ego problem and we may be dwelling too much on “ourselves”. Thanks for the comment:)

  2. So many other gospels. Humility comes from knowing who you/we are! Paul said in Romans 7:19-21 For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. Ok that’s Paul what does God say? Genesis 6:5-7 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. When we see our self with the eyes of God and know our ONLY redeeming attribute is In Christ Jesus, the savior of our soul we then know the true self and find humility!
Take the mind off the self life, it profits nothing. Peace comes from abiding in Jesus and knowing He paid the price to save our wretched asses. If I choose to look at Him rather than self, ie; my problems, attributes, goodness, weekness, works of the flesh, feeling warm and fuzzy because I think I am holy or have touched someone with my greatness in humility or learned something from someone or taught someone something then and only then will you/we come to know the love of Christ which passes all knowledge..Ephesians 3:19. .Make your life in thought about Jesus and He will make His life about you! And I will close with this portion (LOL) Romans 8:5-8 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

    • Definitely agree that humility is not focusing on what WE are or what WE do. Its knowing that Christ loves us and our willingness to do what he wants us to do in our daily lives. And He can receive the glory. Thank you for your comment🙂

  5. I love your post, especially the prayer at the end. I speaks volumes about the role of humility for the recovering alcoholic/addict as far as the attitude one needs to adopt in Step Seven in recovery. The self/ego needs to be subjugated to God/our higher power because we don’t have the power to overcome by our own limited strength. In my blog postings I write about gracitude, a coined term describing how grace from God and the gratitude of the individual work together for healing in the recovery process.
